Three Rituals - Music Inspired By Michael Heizer’s City

I first became interested in the work of contemporary artist, Michael Heizer, when a 340 ton rock passed through my neighborhood in 2012. It was on it's way to LACMA where it would be installed as part of a permanent installation known as Levitated Mass.
I eventually learned of his land art works, and ultimately, City, a massive piece of earth art located in the remote desert of Nevada. Heizer began the project in the early 1970s and when it is completed, it will be one of the largest sculptures ever built.
City, is not open to the public yet and so my inspirations for these three pieces came from seeing the photographs that have emerged in recent years of the various complexes and interviews with Heizer in which he explained his inspirations for his work.
I wanted to create “sonic rituals” for each of the three major complexes and drew upon the ideas of ritual cities and temples of ancient civilizations, post apocalyptic themes and modern ruins.
I’m not sure what the artist would think of my interpretations, but I hope to one day visit City when he’s ready to share it with the world.
